Double bind

  Double Bind is a documentary-theatre show, a result of a drama workshop involving Romanian and Hungarian actors, who went through a creative process based on their own personal experience, letting the feelings and hidden thoughts of both communities loose. The minority shoulders its pain and anger. The majority admits its dominating and abusive tendencies. The minority realizes that there is no need for repression any longer, as it blocks itself. The majority feels isolated and excluded, in spite of seeming powerful, and lives through the pain and anguish of being misunderstood. The minority admits it is sometimes abusive, posing as a victim.

    Alina Nelega, a drama author involved with underground theatre, and Kincses Réka, a film director, share the pleasure of forcing taboos and tackling themes people are afraid of and prefer to keep silent about. Their common endeavor gave birth to a show that makes use of documentary film technique: it does not fabricate anything, but captures slices of reality.

Double Blind is played with cards on the table, without trying to reconcile or false pretense of mutual understanding. An ambiguous relationship is revealed, a vicious circle that cannot be escaped by other means than changing the context. Such a change, the show suggests, is possible only after confronting oneself and accepting crisis and evil as part of reality.

    Alina Nelega is a drama author. Her plays have been translated in English, German, French, Hungarian, Polish, Bulgarian etc., published in anthologies, magazines and books, and are played both in the country and abroad. She is a twice recipient of the UNITER ”Play of the Year” Award (2000, 2013) and has been awarded the distinction ”European Author” at Heidelberger Theatrestueckemarkt (2007).

    Kincses Réka is a film director. She graduated from the German Film and Television Academy in Berlin. Her films were finalists in numerous festivals and have won important awards. She is a recipient of the Grand Prize at Astra Film Festival with the documentary ”Balkan Champion” (2006).
