Astra Film Festival 2013 - Awards

ASTRA FILM GRAND PRIZE

offered by: ASTRA FILM

MATHEW’S LAWS by Marc Schmidt

JURY'S MOTIVATION

Where do we start: there are many reasons why we chose this film: extraordinary access; tremendous emotional sensitivity and respect towards the character who lives in pain.  A film that shows the cruel limits of the bureaucratic welfare state.  Beautifully composed cinematography and storytelling.   An extraordinary example for any student of film about instinctive emotional intelligence of a good director, which allows him to gain the trust of his main character.

BEST DOCUMENTARY IN THE INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION

offered by: HBO Romania

DANCING ALONE by Biene Pilavci

JURY'S MOTIVATION

An extremely courageous film about a young woman’s traumatic childhood and how she confronts her past family demons.  We respect the intimacy of the storytelling  -  and how it raises the more general issues confronting the Turkish diaspora – or of any immigrant community general.  She bears witness to family injustice with dignity and grace.

BEST DOCUMENTARY IN THE CENTRAL & EASTERN EUROPE COMPETITION

offered by Consulatul General al Germaniei

ANATOMY OF THE DEPARTURE by Şerban Oliver Tataru

JURY'S MOTIVATION

It is a personal story within thousands of stories.  The filmmaker raises universal questions through a merciless interrogationof parents’ decisions that change the future of their children’s lives.  It is also about how memory works.  A story of one family’s history, told from three different perspectives, challenging the idea of collective memory.

BEST DOCUMENTARY IN THE ROMANIAN COMPETITION

offered by: TVR

IN MAYOR’S NAME by Anca Hirte

JURY'S MOTIVATION

Exceptional access and fine cinema verite, examine the relationship between people and power in this understated but impressive film.

ECO-CINEMATOGRAFF AWARD

offered by: Fundaţia pentru Parteneriat

LITTLE LAND by Nikos Dayandas (Greece)

JURY'S MOTIVATION

Little Land reveals the core of ecology. In a world where people are the prisoners of the race for development, accumulation and consumption, a world that exhausts the resources of the planet, Nikos Dayandas’s documentary brings the alternative of a temperate life close to nature.  Paraphrasing Milan Kundera, this film gives a hint that “Life is elswhere” …

BEST DOCUMENTARY IN THE STUDENT COMPETITION

offered by: ICR

CLINICAL ROMANCE by Elke Margarete Lehrenkrauss (Germany)

JURY'S MOTIVATION

He keeps things she throws them away – he’s the past, she’s the future. Can you rekindle a love that seems impossible? An intimate chamber piece full of tragicomic  verbal duels. A remarkable voice and style in a student film. We as a jury feel we already recognize the signature of the author.

BEST IMAGE AWARD FOR A ROMANIAN DOCUMENTARY

offered by: Kodak Romania

VALLEY OF SIGHS by Mihai Andrei Leaha, Iulia Hossu, Andrei Crişan

JURY'S MOTIVATION

Extraordinarily haunting images raise a film from mere testimony to a moving cinematic experience.

SPECIAL AWARD FOR A ROMANIAN DOCUMENTARY

offered by: Formula AS

The TANASE DOSSIER by Ionuț Teianu

JURY'S MOTIVATION

A moving film with a twofold message equally touching. It is touching in revealing the drama of the protagonists, and that of the Romanian dissidence – a subject we are insufficiently aware of – and disturbing for those who have lived that period, and who should not forget it. History must not be forgotten.

DEBUT FILM AWARD FOR A ROMANIAN FILMMAKER

offered by: DIGI 24 & Show TV “Ca-n filme”

MY FAMILY, BRIEFLY by Elena Borcea

JURY'S MOTIVATION

This Debut Award goes to a person who impressed us with her energy, and freshness, and determination. Her documentary is a fist (shy) step in a world she does not know too much about ... so far. She made the shooting and editing all by herself and obviously there’s a lot she must still learn, but she succeeded to make us ask ourselves: what were we doing when we were 16?

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY IN THE STUDENT COMPETITION

offered by: Kodak Romania

MAN MADE PLACE by Yu-Shen Su (Germania)

JURY'S MOTIVATION

Beautiful images that put the viewer in a meditative trance, observing the transitions of cities, of regimes, of civilizations.  A visual meditation on humanties, utopias and dystopias.
