100 years ago, in 1914, at the outbreak of the First World War, the Kingdom of Romania declared its neutrality (1914-1916).

However, according to their status as citizens of the Habsburgic Empire, Romanians in Transylvania, Banat and Bucovina were enroled from the beginning of the war in 1914 and fought for Austro-Hungary, while the Bessarabians fought for the interests of Tzarist Russia.

Romanians outside the borders of the Kingdom of Romania were assigned on the fronts that did not witness direct conflicts with the Romanian troops, namely on the Italian and the Russian secondary front; however, there were cases, as in Galicia, in which Transylvanians and Romanians from Bucovina fought against the Bessarabians who were enroled in the Tzarist army.
