Astra Film Festival 2014- Top documentary cinema in Sibiu!

The twenty one editition of Astra Film - Sibiu International Documentary Festival will take place between 6 - 12 October 2014.

1.400 films from 90 countries were signed up in 2014 at Astra Film Festival, out of which  120 films from 40 countries have been selected in the official program.

Astra Film Festival 2014 has four competitional sections. The International one gathers the newest films all over the world, directed by authors like Frederick Wiseman, Michel Gondry or Corneliu Porumboiu. The films from East and Central Europe section tackle subjects which define the region’s identity and portray realities unknown even to neighbouring countries. The Student section allows the entrance of productions of young authors from the great university centers of Geneva, Manchester, London, Munchen, Budapest, Bucharest or San Antonio de los Baños (Cuba). This year’s latest Romanian productions will be released in the Romania section. Along with the competitional sections, there will also be a series of special programs which will complete the 2014 Astra Film Festival edition.

Astra Film Festival is a promotor of the documentary film and it brought the latest romanian and international productions on the big screen, since 1993. AFF is the festival which has popularised  the non-fictional film in Romania and it has brought to light present-day human realities. Relying on the overwhelming succes and the social and cultural impact of the latest years’ documentaries, the current issue of the Sight and Sound magazine published by the British Film Institute, has drawn up a list of the top best documentaries of all time, with the vote of 340 qualified directors, programmers, critics and theoreticians. The top is available here: www.bfi.org.uk/sight-sound-magazine/greatest-docs.

The 2014 edition’s program brings the most valuable documentary cinema productions on the big screen in Sibiu. The fact that films from previous editions, such as The Act of Killing, Leviathan, West of the Tracks, Belovy or Titicut Follies can be found among the top 30 best documentaries according to the British Film Institute, proves once again that Astra Film Festival has contributed to the well-established reputation of the documenary cinema in Romania and  in the world.

„Due to its programs’ profile, Astra Film Festival gained a place in the top of the contemporary documnetary cinema events. Its contribution to the relaunching of the genre in popular culture, during its 21 year of existence,is recognised and indisputable. The British Film Institute’s pole comes as a reassurance of the fact that today, the focus of the cinema industry is equally balanced between  the fictional film and the documentary one.”,declared Dumitru Budrala, founding director of Astra Film Festival.
